Is the Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 Worth the Money? We have read a lot of reviews around the new Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 laptop. However, since we can't write a review without having tested the notebook, we spent $899 and bought a brand new Y460 to see how it behaves when put to the ultimate tests. We admit it immediately caught our eye with its elegant lines and stylish design. This is one of the best looking laptops we had the chance to test to date. The designers at Lenovo really made a great job. However, we are more interested by what a laptop can do than by its good looks. So we immediately put our new acquisition to the test. Here is what we found out. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 packs a very potent processing unit, an Intel Core i3 350M processor. This marvelous piece of hardware works on a high frequency of 2.26 GHz on a front side bus of 1066 MHz and an L2 cache of 3 MB. We put the CPU through our most resource intensive multi tasking tests and we must admit it behaved very well. It is simply amazing how these little processors handle our tests! We proudly give the CPU 10 out of 10 points for its performance and agility. We immediately noticed that the processor was helped by the 4 GB of PC3 8500 DDR3 memory working at a high speed of no less than 1066 MHz. Further more, users can upgrade the Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 to the maximum capacity of 8 GB of DDR3 RAM. Since the graphics processing unit is very important to every laptop, we started testing the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HM55 HD found inside the Lenovo IdeaPad Y460. We were pleased with the results, although they could be better for a price of $899. The video card managed to output crisp, sharp graphics on the 14.0 inch HD display (using Widescreen technology as well as the new LED backlight technology) at 1366 x 768 pixels maximum resolution. The video card and display receive just 9 out of 10 points for the low resolution. Next, the large, 500 GB hard disk drive was large enough to accommodate all our movies, documents, and games. However, the downside was its small, 5400 rotations per minute speed, which impacted the overall performance of our Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 laptop. We can give it just 8 out of 10 points for the HDD, but it earns a few extra points for the Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and DVD Recordable optical drive (supporting Dual Layer). Our brand new Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 ultra portable 14 inch laptop behaved very well in our tests, and its processor and memory exceeded our expectations. However, we would have expected a faster HDD and better maximum resolution.
